They Sold a Whole Shipwreck in Five Days
3 November 2026 om 21:00
Amsterdam, April 1986. Two porcelain experts from Beijing sit in a hotel ballroom with $30,000 and one job: to bring something home. Within minutes they realise their money will not buy a single lot. In five days, an entire shipwreck is sold in that room — 160,000 pieces of it.

The ship was the Geldermalsen, a Dutch East India Company vessel sailing home from Canton in 1752 with tea, porcelain, silk — and 147 pieces of gold hidden away from the tea chests. On a calm evening in January her captain believed he had already passed a dangerous shoal. He had not. Two blows on the reef, a broken rudder, and by night the ship was gone. Eighty men went down with her. Thirty-two reached Batavia in two open boats — and were questioned as if they were thieves, because the gold had vanished with the ship.
For 233 years the wreck lay forgotten. Then, in 1985, a salvor and his partner found her, packed in black tea "like a giant teapot". The cargo became the "Nanking Cargo", the most famous sale of its kind, worth around 37 million guilders. Collectors called it a rescue. Many archaeologists called it one of the worst things ever done to a shipwreck. And 22 of the gold pieces have never been found.

💬 When a treasure hunter finds a wreck that governments and museums never went looking for — does he have the right to sell what he brings up? Or should it belong to everyone? Tell me below. I read them.
Note: This video is a historical retelling. Visuals are cinematic recreations and dramatizations, not documentary footage; living people are not depicted. Claims that part of the cargo was destroyed during the salvage are reported as allegations and accounts, not as established fact, and the salvors' side is presented in the video.
