Nestled between stone, concrete, and austere container homes in Amsterdam-West lies a vegetable garden where asylum seekers, local residents, and volunteers garden, cook, and eat together.
Growing Roots, a program by The Present, creates green meeting places in asylum seeker centers, together with residents, neighbors, and local partners. What starts with a garden grows into new connections, a greater sense of purpose and mental resilience, increased biodiversity, and a stronger community.
They are currently active at the Willinklaan asylum seeker center in Amsterdam and the Amstelveen center. But every asylum seeker center deserves such a beautiful place.
